How to Teach Your Toddler Good Hygiene: Little Things Can Pay Off in a Big Way
Kids are always filled with energy. Although some prefer to stay indoors mostly glued to their smartphone screens, others love to play with their friends outdoors for hours.
When they return home, it’s inevitable for them to sport dirty hands and clothes. Their bodies could be crawling with germs that could make them sick.
Good personal hygiene is one of the basic things that you can teach your children so they can stay healthy. The earlier your children learn to develop the habit of self-care, the more likely they’ll be able to practice that habit well into their adult years.
5 Hygiene Habits You Can Teach Your Children
Germs are everywhere. Being 100-percent germ-free is impossible, which is why good personal hygiene is important to fend off any possible diseases or infections. No matter how clean a place may look, you can’t be complacent, especially with your kids. Teaching good personal hygiene habits is one of the best ways you can help them maintain their good health even when you’re not around.
Take a look at these basic hygiene habits that you need to teach your children.
- Practice proper handwashing.
This is one of the easiest and most beneficial habits you can teach your children. Properly washing one’s hands can do wonders to prevent sickness since it helps limit the spread of germs. Almost every surface we touch is covered with unseen microorganisms. Combine this with a child’s uncanny habit of constantly touching their mouths and eyes, and you have a possible recipe for illness.
Make sure that your kids know how to properly wash their hands using soap. They should lather both their hands for at least 15 seconds before they rinse in clean running water from the faucet. Teach them to wash every crevice of their hands. They should not just run their hands under the tap for two seconds and call it done.
- Avoid touching mouth, eyes, and nose.
Kids love to put their fingers in their mouths, pick their noses, and rub their eyes. These are the main entry points for germs to enter the human body. Remind your kids not to touch these parts as much as possible, especially with unwashed or dirty hands.
- Practice proper bathing.
Kids as young as six years can already shower by themselves. However, you need to supervise them at first and make sure they’re bathing right. Teach them the right way to shampoo and rinse until you’re confident they can do it on their own. Make sure they get into the habit of washing their bodies with soap and to always shampoo their hair when they take a bath. Skipping either part isn’t a good hygiene practice.
- Know how to brush teeth properly.
A quick brushing of the teeth isn’t enough. Make sure your children know how to properly brush their teeth and to floss. The longer they brush, the better! If they take good care of their teeth now, they’ll appreciate it when they get older.
- Know when to cover their mouths.
Teach your kids the habit of covering their mouths when they sneeze or cough. Don’t let them use their bare hands in covering their mouths. Have them use a handkerchief or tissue paper. If there’s none available or they can’t reach one fast enough, they can use the crook of their arm to cover their mouths.
How You Can Help Children Fight Off Serious Illnesses
Hygiene is important for maintaining a healthy body. However, teaching hygienic practices is already way overdue for kids fighting off serious diseases. What they urgently need is proper medical care.
Unfortunately, many of them are not able to get such medical care because they come from low-income families who cannot afford the high cost of hospitalization and treatment.
