5 Simple and Practical Ways to Prevent Your Car from Overheating

Is There Something Wrong with Your Car’s Cooling System?

Car overheating is one of the common problems encountered by drivers. In general, it happens because something’s wrong with a car’s cooling system or, in the case of engine overheating, heat isn’t able to escape the engine compartment.

This can be due to a cooling system leak, faulty radiator fan, broken water pump, clogged coolant hose, low coolant level, thermostat malfunction, or low motor oil. High outside temperatures can also contribute to overheating.

You can avoid the discomfort and hassles caused by overheating by keeping your vehicle in good condition at all times through regular maintenance. You can also reduce the temperature inside your car by taking the following steps:

  1. Keep your car cool.

As outside temperature contributes to the heat inside your vehicle, park in the shade as much as possible. You can also tint your windows or use window shields to prevent the UV rays of the sun from making the interior super-hot.

  1. Leave your window slightly open.

Especially during the hot summer months, you can help the hot air inside your car escape by leaving a small crack in your window before you park it outdoors. However, make sure the area where you park your car is safe from thieves since they just might take advantage of the small opening in your window to steal valuables inside the vehicle.

  1. Use fresh air.

Your air conditioning uses up added power that strains your engine. That’s why as much as possible, let your AC rest and just leave the windows open. If you must use your AC, set it to fresh air for about 10 minutes. Don’t choose the recirculation setting since in doing so, you would just be moving the hot trapped air inside your vehicle. After your vehicle has cooled down with the infusion of fresh air inside, you can then opt to recirculate the air.

  1. Keep watch over your thermostat.

Don’t wait for the temperature warning lights on your dashboard to turn on before taking steps to reduce the temperature inside. If you notice that the temperature inside your car has become too hot for comfort, turn off the vehicle and open the windows to give it a chance to cool down before restarting it again.

  1. Pay attention to your engine coolant.

Make sure that your engine coolant is at the right level at all times. This helps your engine deal with the heat as it powers up your car. However, over time, your engine coolant will get dirty so you must do a radiator flush to drain the old coolant out of the radiator and replace it with a fresh one.
