7 Common Conditions in Newborns You’ll Want to Know
Is Your Baby Showing Signs that Worry You?
As a parent, you only want the best for your baby. However, sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. The infant may show signs that can confuse or worry you. Nothing can be more nerve-wracking than seeing them exhibit conditions that you’re not familiar with.
No need to worry though. Many conditions that babies exhibit should not alarm you. Such conditions can usually be managed with proper care and attention. Learning about them can help put your mind at ease. In doing so, you’ll feel more confident that any potential medical issues affecting your little one can be addressed quickly and appropriately.
Kids Car Donations is here to shed light on 7 common conditions in newborns so you can be well-informed as you navigate your parenthood and life with a new family member. Let’s get started!
- Jaundice
After birth, some babies develop yellowish skin and eyes due to elevated levels of bilirubin in their blood. Bilirubin is the yellowish pigment in the bile that forms as a product of hemoglobin, the protein that gives red blood cells their characteristic color and transports oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues.
This condition is known as jaundice. It usually resolves on its own within a few weeks. However, some jaundice cases need to be treated. If left untreated, the infant could develop brain injury.
Jaundice is more common in breastfed babies, especially those who aren’t nursed well. Breastfeeding mothers are highly advised to nurse at least eight to 12 times per day so enough milk will be produced, thus keeping bilirubin levels low.
- Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome (NRDS)
This condition occurs when the baby’s lungs are too immature to work properly and they cannot get enough oxygen. It is usually treated with supplemental oxygen or ventilation, depending on the severity of the case.
- Blue baby
Blue baby is a condition where the baby’s skin has a bluish tint due to insufficient oxygen. It may occur due to structural heart defects or inadequate delivery of oxygen-rich blood from the lungs. If left untreated, it could cause serious complications such as brain damage and even death.
- Birth injuries
Some babies may suffer injuries during delivery due to physical stress or improper use of medical instruments. Common birth injuries include fractured collarbones and nerve damage that can result in partial paralysis.
- Reflux
Reflux in babies usually occurs when stomach contents flow back up into their esophagus after feeding. This can cause discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes difficulty breathing. Reflux is usually temporary and goes away on its own as the baby’s digestive system matures. However, some babies with this condition may require special care.
- Infections
Infections are common in newborns, especially if their mother was infected during labor. Common infections include streptococcal sepsis, meningitis, and herpes.
- Respiratory distress
Respiratory distress is another common condition where the baby has difficulty breathing due to an immature or faulty lung structure. It may be caused by conditions such as pneumonia, infection, fluid buildup in the lungs, or premature birth. This can be a potentially serious condition and requires prompt medical attention.
Reach Out to Parents Seeking Help for their Sick Babies
Because of their fragility, newborns, particularly those with serious health issues, need full medical attention. Sadly, parents with little means to support their children are unable to provide their babies with proper medical care, putting their lives at risk.
You can help extend valuable support to such parents in your community. All you need to do is donate any vehicle that you no longer want to us at Kids Car Donations.
We’ll sell your donated vehicle through an auction and use the proceeds to support the pediatric healthcare programs of our charity partners. These IRS-certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations use the funding we give them to provide children from indigent families with free comprehensive and quality medical assistance. This includes solutions and treatments for a wide range of pediatric health challenges, emotional support, and relief of pain and trauma. Our charity partners also promote children’s care, advocacy, research, and education.
As a donor, you’ll have the privilege of getting our free professional pickup and towing service anywhere in the United States. You’ll also be entitled to claim the maximum tax deduction in the next tax season.
Best of all, your generosity will leave you with a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that your donation will be used to help save children’s lives.
We don’t limit donations to standard vehicles that are in good condition. We’re willing to accept almost all types of vehicles even if they have defects and are no longer running.
