You can minimize idling by turning off your car’s engine if you’re parked for more than 10 seconds. Depending on engine size and air conditioner use, idling can consume a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour. Newer car models don’t need more than a minute to “wake up.” Letting your car warm up longer than that is unnecessary.
- Roll your windows down when driving slowly.
Consider being more prudent when using your air conditioner this summer. Turning off your air-conditioner when moving at slower speeds or while in stop-and-go traffic can help you save money by increasing your fuel efficiency.
- Keep your windows up when driving fast.
Rolling your windows down and turning off your AC only works well if you’re driving slowly. When you’re going fast on the freeway, using your AC can actually help you save gas. Open windows make your vehicle less aerodynamic, so it uses more energy to push air out of the way as it cruises down the highway.
