How to Improve Your Social-Emotional Learning Skills

Boost Your Social-Emotional Learning Skills with These 4 Tips

People with high social-emotional learning skills are more self-aware and attuned to their emotions as well as those of others. These are the kind of individuals who are better equipped at solving problems with ease, making informed decisions, managing emotions, and building positive relationships. Not surprisingly, students and adults possessing high SEL skills thrive in school, work, and life in general.

No matter how old you are, you can always enhance your social-emotional learning skills. While these skills are ideally taught in classrooms through various programs, anyone can still learn a few simple ways on their own. Kids Car Donations shows here how:

1. Use self-distancing.

Self-distancing is the act of observing yourself as if you’re an outside observer. This means that you watch your experiences or talk about them in the third person.

According to research, this practice helps us understand our emotions better during difficult situations as it decreases the intensity of our emotional experience. As a result, we become more engaged in constructive problem-solving instead of ruminating or replaying those experiences over and over.

2. Label emotions.

A study found that labeling our emotions decreases the response of our amygdala, which is the part of our brain that’s associated with emotional responses. As author and psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Siegel puts it, “name it to tame it.”

Whenever you’re having a strong emotional reaction, name that emotion, whether quietly or aloud. Picking any word to describe subtle emotions jumpstarts your executive brain and calms down your limbic brain, the region that deals with emotions.

If you don’t allow yourself to identify your strong emotions, you may become fearful of them and shut them down. While you might think that there’s nothing wrong with restricting such negative emotions, it can actually be a bad thing. This may lead you to shut down all your emotions, including happiness and pleasure.

3. Practice mindfulness.

Being mindful makes it easier for us to know how to navigate our emotions healthily. Since it focuses on the here and now, people who practice mindfulness seldom worry about their future or think about the mistakes they’ve made in the past. Experts also believe that mindfulness exercises play a part in helping individuals accept painful experiences, rather than avoid them.

4. Write about your emotions.

Writing about our emotional experiences builds happiness, lowers anxiety and depression, and improves school and work performance. Consider starting an emotional journal, which you can use as an outlet for releasing bottled-up emotions. Expressing yourself as freely as you want gives you a sense of peace and relief. You’ll notice yourself feeling a lot lighter.

Transform an Old Clunker into a Beacon of Hope

If you happen to have a rusty old car lying around in your garage, why don’t you just get rid of it for a meaningful cause? By donating it to us here at Kids Car Donations, you’ll be helping improve and even save the lives of ailing girls and boys in your community. Not only will you skip the hassles of selling a beater, but you also get to play the part of a hero!

We’ll place your donated vehicle up for auction, with the proceeds going straight to our nonprofit partners. They use the funds to support sick kids through a range of vital programs. These include essential health care, medical treatment, access to free educational and social service resources, and emotional well-being projects.

Since our charity partners are IRS-approved 501(c)(3) nonprofits, your donation will entitle you to receive a top tax deduction in the next tax season. Expect the 100% tax-deductible sales receipt of your vehicle in your mailbox within 30 days following its sale. Also, with our free towing services available in all 50 states, you’ll be saving a huge chunk of money!

The best reward you’ll get, however, is the experience of feeling the joy and satisfaction of giving something that will help in bringing back the smiles and vitality of sick children.

We accept pretty much all types of vehicles — cars, RVs, motorcycles, boats, trailers, golf carts, snowmobiles, motorized wheelchairs, and even planes! Plus, they don’t have to be in decent shape when we haul them away.
